By the time Ryan, his dad, and his brother got back, it was late morning. He walked in the door, for some reason expecting Kylee to be there waiting for him with open arms.

Instead, all he got was his mom reading in the corner and his grandma crocheting in the family room.

“Where’s Kylee?” he asked, searching the room.

“I knew it. She took the first opportunity to run,” Mason said behind him, rubbing his hands together to warm up.

Ryan scoffed. “You’re probably right, but it’s because she found out she was stuck with you for a brother-in-law for the rest of her life.”

“You two,” Ryan’s mom said. “She went for a walk on the back trail about thirty minutes ago. She should be home soon. You might be able to catch her if you head out that way.”

Ryan nodded and went straight out the back door. He was surprised at the disappointment he’d felt at not seeing her. Waking up that morning had been different, and not just because he’d been sleeping on the floor. Seeing Kylee snuggled warmly in the bed had given him strange feelings. Feelings of contentment and almost longing. He’d wondered what it would have been like to wake up every morning seeing her. More specifically, what it would have been like waking up actually next to her, instead of on the floor.

He thought about this as he made his way out to the trail, dead pine needles crunching under his shoes. The weather wasn’t freezing, but it was at least in the mid-50s. He shoved his hands into his pockets to keep them warm.

Ryan had walked this trail many times over the last few years. It was one of his mom’s favorite haunts, and he often joined her in the early mornings whenever he’d visit. He wondered how Kylee liked it.

After ten minutes, he finally rounded the bend right before the lookout point. Kylee came into view, squatting low on the ground with her phone in front of her, taking pictures. He watched her for a few minutes in silence.

Every couple of seconds, she changed her position and moved her camera to a different angle. She wasn’t taking typical scenic shots. She was getting pictures from all different points—down low behind a rock, up high next to the tree branches. He wondered what the purpose of these were.

Not wanting to startle her, he called out from ten feet away. “Hey, pretty lady. What are you doing out here?”

She spun around, her eyes wide. “Ryan! How did you find me?”

He tried not to laugh. “Well, you are standing on the main trail that goes past my parents’ backyard. And my mom told me where you’d gone. It wasn’t too hard.”

Her worry lines slowly eased, and she smiled. “Of course.”

He approached until they were shoulder to shoulder, staring out over the valley. “So, what are you taking pictures of?”

She blushed a little. “Nothing specific. It’s just such a beautiful scene. I wanted to capture it.”

“Did you bring any of your camera equipment?” he asked.
